How Yoga Can Benefit Your Relationships

“Have you ever thought of how yoga can help you improve your relationship? That’s okay”
By Lucy Benton July 2, 2019

Have you ever thought of how yoga can help you improve your relationship? That’s okay if you haven’t – most people don’t know that. Well, the truth is that yoga can be a workshop for working on relationship issues; in fact, it’s a lot like a relationship in many ways.

For example, each of them takes significant time to get good at, require commitment and open-mindedness, and anyone can jump right in and become a master. The word “yoga” literally means “union,” which also shows that the purpose of the practice is to enrich your bonding with your significant other.

Let’s now focus on how practicing yoga can benefit your relationship.

Yoga Can Help to Fight Less

Unfortunately, conflicts and fights are inevitable in most relationships. Couples fight over different things sometimes as silly as whether to punish a child teaching a younger sibling how to get out of homework. Regardless of the reason to fight, any conflict can be very destructive to a relationship.

A common reason for them, though, is stress that we encounter in our daily lives, so reducing stress can help to avoid many conflicts.

One of the main purposes of yoga is to help people calm down and relax. In fact, it’s a combination of many stress management techniques, including

  • Mental imagery
  • Meditation
  • Controlled breathing
  • Stretching
  • Physical movement

The effectiveness of yoga in battling stress is well-known, and there’s scholar evidence to support this claim.

When people avoid stress, they are more relaxed and focused, which also means that they are less likely to engage in conflicts.

Yoga Can Help to Build Trust

Trust is, without doubt, a critical part of any relationship. In fact, if there’s no trust between the partners, the relationship is simply meaningless.

How does yoga build trust?

“Many poses in couple yoga require the partners to rely on each other,” explains Mona Rhodes, an office yoga teacher at Assignment Helper. “For example, they need one partner to support the other to do the pose and trust each other’s decisions.”

Since supporting and guiding each other into and of the pose is essential to having a productive yoga session, a regular practice will ensure that you and your significant other build trust and both of you are willing to rely on each other’s decisions.

Naturally, that’s wonderful news for your relationships as well.

Yoga Can Improve Teamwork

While yoga is certainly not a team sport, it can improve the quality of teamwork by you and your partner. There are many ways in which yoga facilitates teamwork, including meditation and partner poses.

For example, as it was mentioned before, partner poses develop connection, trust, and intimacy between partners. These qualities emerge when two people work toward a common goal. Also, meditation is another tool for promoting teamwork because it involves focusing the mind on one activity performed together.

Yoga Can Improve Sex Life and Sexual Health

There are a number of ways in which yoga can help you with sex life and sexual health.

It relaxes body and mind

According to As Anita Sadaty, MD, a gynecologist, “Men have sex to relax, but women must be relaxed to have sex.” A yoga session can help women to achieve relaxation and enjoy sex more than usual.

It can help to reduce premature ejaculation

The research on yoga’s benefits for sexual health is still in its infancy, but some good results have already been produced. For example, a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that men who were diagnosed with premature ejaculation and practiced yoga regularly achieved statistically significant improvement in their condition compared to men who used a common drug treatment.

Yoga improves flexibility

The more flexible you are, the more sex positions you can try. It’s a known fact that many people practice several poses all the time, so being more flexible in their muscles can help them to try different positions and maximize their pleasure.
