How Many People Approve of School Uniform

More and more schools are requiring uniforms now. Meetville.com (dating app to find the right person) measured public opinion on the topic of uniforms in a poll, conducted between the 4/17/14 to 9/9/14.

During the poll people answered the question: “Do uniforms make schools better? Should kids have to wear school uniforms?” The responses were as follows: 58% - “Yes” and 42% - “No”.

Grace Chen, education researcher and writer, mentions that proponents of the uniform often refer to school safety, as well as diminishing socioeconomic differences, as their primary motivation. They also believe that uniforms create a better learning environment at school. Opponents cite research that shows a lack of individualism and comfort among students, working to actually decrease student learning and success.

Participants of the poll numbered 89,076. The topic of school uniforms is debated in different countries. Although Britain already has a tradition of wearing school uniforms there were only 12% of respondents from Britain, while the majority come from the USA - 49%. In Canada (5%)  uniforms are not required in many schools, in Australia (7%) each school can set its own uniform policy. Uniform is also present in other countries (27%).

Alex Cusper, Meetville service analyst, points out that “No country has influenced the school uniforms worn by children around the world more than England. The practice has been adopted by other countries, and is now common in many parts of the world.”
