Even confident people face awkward situations on first dates. Maria Trimarchi, a contributing writer, says: “While the dating scene may seem like a lot of work to one person, to another, it's a fun way to meet other people. But all things being equal, first dates can make most of us anxious.”

Every single detail matters on your first date. Krystele Gueyaud, an article writer, is sure: “The way you look, behave and communicate all have a huge impact on whether your first date will lead to a second. As the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression! So here are a few pointers to help you make your next rendez-vous as successful as possible.”

Some topics should definitely be avoided not to make your potential partner feel uncomfortable.  Krystele Gueyaud points out: “Things like hobbies, travel, movies, culture, sports, etc., are all suitable topics. Stay away from personal and sensitive matters, there will be plenty of time to talk about your past relationships, family issues and political views in the future.”

There are a number of things that shouldn’t be done if you want to succeed and win a second date. For example, make a woman pay or let her feel that you are interested in your mobile more than in her. Giulia Simolo, a journalist with a penchant for analyzing relationship dynamics, says: “There’s nothing wrong with going Dutch on a first date, but it’s really the gentlemanly thing to pick up the bill for her. When she reaches into her purse, tell her that you have it covered. If you find the situation awkward, you could always be discreet by handing over your credit card in advance. She’ll be impressed that you took the effort for her and your chivalry will increase your chances of a second date.” Maria Trimarchi advises: “Checking your mobile phone during a date is one of the quickest ways to make someone feel uncomfortable. Whether you're taking a call or a text, using your phone sends the signal that you're not interested in your date.”

Don’t forget about the importance of a great last impression. Giulia Simolo adds: “By the end of the first date, there’s often an awkwardness that descends, with both parties not knowing if the other had a fun time or not. If you had a good time with her, then tell her. She will really appreciate hearing it, and it will save her from having to dissect the date’s occurrences with her girlfriends later.”

Alex Cusper, Meetville service analyst, sums up: “There are some certain pointers to ensure a date with your crush is a success. Avoid interrupting, be polite and give your date your full attention, show her a great interest and stay honest in all your responses. The most important is to be yourself no matter what.”
