When choosing a present, we want it to be meaningful and symbolic. Many people go for a nice and pricy jewellery. But the most expensive doesn’t always mean the best one. Columnist Rhodri Marsden believes that: “Blinded by the misconception that the price of a gift is a measure of affection, we blow oodles of cash to make up for the fact that we have no better ideas. We push the boat out, buying ornate trinkets for people who don’t even wear jewellery.”

Another traditional Valentine’s Day Gift is chocolate. But a cheap box of a sweet treat from a drugstore is not an option if you want your partner to be delighted with your gift. Exquisite gourmet chocolate is the only way to go, otherwise think of something else. According to Rhodri Marsden “Ultimately chocolate is just food. You’re giving each other food. “Eat this. It’s fuel. It makes you go.” And bear in mind that if you melted down the expensive stuff that contains horny goat weed, dong quai, shilajit and fo ti, it basically looks the same as a melted-down Snickers.”

Next thing you can think of is a bouquet of flowers. However don’t rush to the nearest shop for them. Columnist Brian Moylan is sure that: “If you give your loved one flowers, it means that you did not plan for this day at all. You either picked them up at a bodega on the way home or you called up FTD in a panic last night and paid an exorbitant amount of money to have something delivered on Monday afternoon.” But he also adds that such a gift shows your partner that: “you are willing to spend a lot of money to make them happy, which is sweet.”

Alex Cusper, Meetville service analyst, adds: “Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to show your affection and add some more romance in your relationships. Ideally, the gift you’ll choose for your significant other, will symbolize your love and deep understanding of your partner. It may take lots of time to find the right present, but that’s the trick: you should put your heart and soul into it to make it memorable.”
