Most People in America Approve of Adoption by Same-Sex Couples
Many people believe that same-sex couples should be able to adopt. Meetville (dating app to find the right person) released a survey to measure public views on this topic.
The poll, held from 7/1/20 to 8/14/20, was based on the question: “Should same-sex couples be allowed to adopt children?”, and had the following results: Yes - 64% and No - 36%.
The total number of participants was 30,223. From the USA - 56%, from Canada - 4%, from Britain - 11%, Australia - 6% and other countries - 23%.
David Badash, the founder and publisher of The New Civil Rights Movement - a website focused on progressive politics and civil rights, highlights: “People no longer consider equality in the relationship, family, and adoption rights some abstract principle.” While the opponents of LGBT adoption regularly argue that this is not a matter of gay/lesbian rights, but of the best interests of the children. Both sides are supported by reasonable arguments, and still, the public stays undecided.
It is interesting that men responding negatively seriously outnumber women; males who voted “No” - 79%, females - 21%.
Alex Cusper, Meetville service analyst, thinks the figures indicate that women tend to be more understanding and are more eager to accept it, maybe because of their sensitive attitude towards the problem of adoption as a whole. Men, in their turn, are more likely to oppose the idea of same-sex adoption.
As for the research of Gallup, it also turned out that the vast majority of Americans believe that gay and lesbian couples should have the legal right to adopt children.
A Gallup poll of 1,028 respondents found that 63% were in favor of giving same-sex couples the right to adopt children, while 35% were against it.
It is noteworthy that support for homosexual parents has grown faster in recent years than support for marriage equality. Currently, according to Gallup, 55% of Americans support the legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States.
The greatest support for the right of same-sex couples to adopt children was noted among supporters of the Democratic Party (80%), but also among Republicans it is at the level of 51%.
Meetville, a leading mobile dating service, regularly conducts research among its users. Millions of people from the U.S., Canada, Britain and Australia answer hundreds of questions every month.
