American Parents Want to Keep Their Children out of the Military

“Joining the military is a big decision that affects both the lives of the young”
By Alex Glover November 5, 2020

Joining the military is a big decision that affects both the lives of the young men and women who choose to serve, and their families as well. Meetville.com (dating app to find the right person) conducted a poll from 6/26/14 to 9/3/14 to find out more about the parents’ feelings.

The question read: “Would you like your child to serve in the army/police?” Some 46% of Americans want their children to join, while the 54% majority don’t share their view.

Military.com posted explanations on the topic: “Parents want the best for their children -- a meaningful and rewarding career, training and preparation for the future, and fun and adventure. Today's the military opportunities offer stable but challenging careers with regular promotions and often accelerated responsibility. However, in the present political climate, with two wars being fought with no end in sight, it can be a very hard decision to make.”

Those polled numbered 43,529. From the USA - 52%, from Canada - 4%, from Britain - 12%, from Australia - 7% and from other countries - 25%.

Alex Cusper, Meetville service analyst, says: “Today the United States military is at a turning point. So are the American people. Economic pressure starts to matter less, once there’s a real risk of going to war. Americans honor the soldiers who sacrifice their lives for the countries, but when it comes to dealing with your own children, it may be a heart-sinking moment.”

Meetville, a leading mobile dating service, regularly conducts research among its users. Millions of people from the U.S., Canada, Britain and Australia answer hundreds of questions every month.
