Dinner is great and you can really learn alot about each other over a nice romantic meal. I think that sometimes going to a nice get-together with someones friends is cool too. You don't have to worry about being alone if you have a variety of people around. And lets face it, your friends are going to ask questions and help you learn about your date, and they are a great judge of character.
